Project Objectives

Tools for a Sustainable, Secure Energy Future

The project will deliver an open-source Capacity Expansion Model (CEM) and a supporting Planning Framework to guide evidence-based decision-making. The tool will:

  • Project and assess future electricity demand
  • Optimise renewable energy uptake and integration
  • Map pathways to achieve the 100% RE target
  • Evaluate cost-effective and technically feasible transition scenarios
  • Strengthen long-term grid security under high VRE conditions

By enabling planners and policymakers to work with consistent, accessible data and modelling tools, the project promotes transparent, rigorous, and repeatable planning processes.

PROJECT FUNDING & RESOURCING πŸ’°

Funded by DCCEEW (Australia) and implemented by UNSW, with collaboration from MMERE and Solomon Power.

  • MMERE provides coordination, data access, and policy oversight
  • Solomon Power provides critical grid and technical information essential for accurate modelling

Future Ownership & Responsibility: Upon completion, the Solomon Islands Governmentβ€”led by MMERE and supported by Solomon Powerβ€”will assume full ownership of:

  • The CEM tool
  • The Planning Framework
  • All datasets and documentation
  • All intellectual property

This ensures national control, long-term sustainability, and continued adaptation of the tool for future planning cycles.
